Engines

YouTube is not sailing.  I know this.  It’s a slightly romanticized version of living on a boat, but there’s a lot that you can’t learn from YouTube, like when to reef your mainsail.  Or how to turn the boat to minimize the slapping of the waves on the bridge deck.  There’s a lot that youContinue reading “Engines”

Pirates!

One of the most frequent questions I get is, “Are you afraid of pirates?” or “I’d be worried about pirates, aren’t you?” Piracy is defined as the act of attacking or robbing ships at sea.  So, what I think I’m being asked is aren’t you afraid of someone attacking you or trying to steal yourContinue reading “Pirates!”

One Lobster

About five years ago, a spearfisherman was fishing for lobster near his anchorage in the Bahamas.  Diving in the turquoise blue waters that surround the Bahamian Islands, he had a very productive day.  After returning to his catamaran, he and his wife knew that they had an extra lobster that they wouldn’t eat that day. Continue reading “One Lobster”

Charter successes

Wind (?) on the open water

We got to the spend the week on a sailboat in the Pacific Northwest.  I’m pretty deliberate about saying we spent a week on a sailboat, because to say we sailed for a week would be a bit of an overstatement!  In typical Lever fashion….we were lacking wind or when we had it, it wasContinue reading “Wind (?) on the open water”

Certified…or Certifiable Sailors!

We wrapped up our American Sailing Association 101 and 103 courses, with the Victoria Sailing School, a couple of weeks ago.  What this entailed was taking our last practical lesson, which was on a J/30, so it was about eight feet longer than the other boats we’ve been on and taking our two tests. FirstContinue reading “Certified…or Certifiable Sailors!”

Money is a renewable resource…Time is not — Ben from Sailing Nahoa

I’ve actually tried about five different versions of this post.  It’s about money.  One of the more common questions I get is, “How can you afford to live like that?”  I understand at the heart of the question is, how can you afford not to work.  As I’ve written the previous versions of this, IContinue reading “Money is a renewable resource…Time is not — Ben from Sailing Nahoa”
